Day 5 - National Park of Krka, Primosten The day starts with a bus ride to Krka national park. It is the site of very cool waterfalls and the second operational hydroelectric plant in the world (two days after Niagra), based on Nikola Tesla's design.
The road into the park is narrow and twisty, so it's alternating one way for buses (cars can travel any time in both directions). The river is full of fish. There are boardwalks set up through the park. I use my people removal superpower for the pictures, in reality it is busy with tourists.
Until last year they allowed tourists to swim under the falls. This is the first year that they don't. I'm glad. Pix so much better without. As is the experience.
A cat being a cat. Doesn't get any more Zen than this.
The waterfalls are very cool. They cascade into a saltwater fjord, creating a freshwater layer on top. So there are two different environments and two types of marine life in the same place, depending on depth.
Besides fish, the other type of wildlife here are ducks.
The hydroelectic plant is no longer in operation, but the history is fascinating. And looking at the adjustable hydrofoil vanes, the engineering is amazing too. Keep in mind construction started in 1894, ten years before first powered airplane flight.
It is quite warm and the walk back to the bus pickup area is uphill. I refill my water bottle from a drinking fountain and pour it all over my head. That helps.
Our next destination is Primosten, another small village. After docking, a walk about. Most settlements here have a hill above them, and on that hill is either a fortress, a church, or a combination of the two. This one is a church.
