02.27/25 Tuesday and Wednesday nights I went to two separate concerts. The overall concept is similar - string instrument interpretations of rock songs. But turns out they couldn't be more different. Which is FUN! The first - a candle-lit string quartet performance of Pink Floyd songs. The second - Metallica songs played on cellos (with an opening act that was suprisingly hard metal, but made perfect sense once I saw the main act). It should be obvious which photos are which and I'll post more videos separately, but a couple are on my FB and IG feed already. The candlelight concert - though candles were 'fake', they were very convincing and a pragmatic solution that set the mood perfectly. The performance itself was awesome. skillful, emotionally resonant, enthusiastic, with an overall vibe of a slightly rebellious classical orchestra gig. Deeply enjoyable and largely in line with what I expected. That was what I came to see. The second show was a surprise on many levels. The main band, Apocalyptica, came to fame doing cello renditions of Metallica songs back in '96. All acoustic, and I was expecting a variation of the previous night's experience. The venue is crystal ballroom, and on arrival the audience (as well as drum set on stage) raised an eyebrow. Best way to describe the vibe is middle-aged headbangers (being fully aware I resemble that remark in nonzero ways). First, the opening band- Nita Strauss - an instrumental HARD metal act with guest vocals in the second half of the set. Awesome energy, visceral. But I was wondering how that would transition to what my understanding/expctation of what Apocalyptica was. WAS. As the opener's equipment was taken away, a cover cloth was pulled off a MUCH BIGGER drum set. Ok, that is new. And then... I'll let pictures tell the rest of the story, and look for a couple more videos soon.
