07/31/21 My first airshow visit in quite some time - one in Mcminnville, taking place right in front of the Evergreen Air Museum that I visited about 15 years ago (and since, but that was the last blog entry). Due to COVID the show is run differently than most - it's a drive-in, with no static displays. Tickets are per carload and you get a 20'x20' spot on the runway or taxiway in which to set up chairs, coolers, etc. I only brought my car and camera, but that was enough. Turned out to be a great experience and well worth the admission, even just for myself. I suppose the superzoom P1000 camera made a contribution, since it is actually a great 'telescope' to spectate an airshow with. I just pressed the button occasionally to try and capture what I was seeing. The results are below. The cloudy and smoky sky made a clear backdrop. This was the first time I have seen an F22 in person, let alone in flight showing off what it can do. Seeing it in formation with a P51 was a special treat. An awesome and memorable day. WWII display was first. Cool to see and hear these machines in the air.
The SU-29 below is flown by Renny Price. I had flown this very plane with him in 2004, performing many of the same maneuvers. It had a different paintjob then. Great to see him still flying, expertly. Perhaps I should go up with him again. The Alpha Jet is a neat machine. This plane (a Decathlon?) went up often as an 'intermission' performer. The F22 did a solo performance first. And then in formation wtih a P51. Some more prop plane aerobatics. Crisp and beautiful to watch. Thunderbirds wrapped up the show. Literally shivers down my spine on some of the low passes. The precision is impeccable. Would love a ride in the back of the two seater. Slim chance, but one can always hope...
